Erythemis simplicicollis is found in eastern North America (from southern Ontario and Quebec to Texas and Arizona), Mexico, Central America, the Bahamas, and the Greater Antilles. It occurs near lakes, ponds, lagoons, slow streams, and ditches with fresh or slightly brackish water and floating vegetation mats. Females and young males of this species are bright green with square blackish spots on the abdomen. Adult male are powdery bluish-grey, with the green face. Eastern Pondhawk feeds on flying insects, including other odonates. This species is active all year in Florida and the tropics, and flies from early May to early October in eastern North America.
